Job Description
Working in a fast-paced news and public affairs environment at a top-10 public research university, the Communications Strategist supports UF Strategic Communications & Marketing’s (SCM) mission to protect and advance the reputation of the university. The Communications Strategist will write news releases, create talking points for issues management/crisis communications, handle proactive and reactive media relations, create multi-media content and draft messaging for audiences on and off campus. In partnership with SCM’s marketing, creative services, social and photo/video teams as well as colleagues around campus, the Communications Strategist will create content for traditional, digital and social media. The ideal candidate can craft messaging quickly and thrives in a role where no two days are the same.
This position will be responsible for supporting strategic and integrated communications efforts by writing feature, science-related and other stories about the University of Florida and its research, programs, faculty members and students; responding to inquiries from student reporters and local media outlets on a variety of topics; and setting the standard of highest quality writing and content development using conventional, social and new media strategies.
Reporting to the Director of Communications in UF Communications, the successful candidate will be working in a matrix system that includes additional teams devoted to marketing, community and government relations, creative services, web services, and crisis communications to ensure coordinated and integrated communications. The primary goal of UF Communications is to elevate UF’s stature by positively positioning the University as a leader in higher education and expanding its national and international recognition.
Responsibilities For This Position Include
Employing and supporting integrated marketing and public relations initiatives and communication that best represents the University of Florida.
Writing, editing, and publishing articles, bulletins, brochures, marketing and promotional material for print publications, web publications, social media and UF News.
Providing media support by responding to inquiries and pitching stories to appropriate news outlets to advance the overall UF mission.
Serving as editor and reviewer of materials created for University Relations and the unit’s priorities and goals.
Maintaining UF branding campaign by monitoring and reviewing web content, ads and various materials.
Monitoring trends and making recommendations on marketing and public relations opportunities.
Maintaining and editing web content on UF News, microsites and the UF homepage.
Expected Salary
$51,000 – $54,000 annually; commensurate with education and experience.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree in an appropriate area; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency in Associated Press style required.
A master’s or bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, communications, journalism, or related field and five years of professional experience preferred.
