Description
The California Smokers’ Helpline (CSH) is part of the UCSD Moore’s Cancer Center and offers free evidence-based telephone counseling to help people quit using tobacco. CSH offers service in six languages–English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, and Vietnamese. In addition, CSH is involved with research in tobacco control through grant funding (NCI, CDC, CMS, TRDRP and others). Several research projects are usually being developed, implemented, written and published. CSH is also responsible for conducting the California Student Tobacco Survey (CSTS) and evaluating California’s TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education) program.
Under supervision of the Director of Research and Evaluation, assist in implementing and coordinating research studies in tobacco use and control. The position encompasses two main tasks. The first is to conduct library research with findings used to submit grants and peer reviewed manuscripts in the area of tobacco control. Finding optimal references requires attention to detail and persistence in order to build up an understanding of the field and use that understanding to evaluate new information. It also involves presenting those findings to the rest of the research team. The second task will be to serve as a recruiter for our school-based California Student Tobacco Survey (CSTS). Maintain school contact database and master list of survey dates. Describe survey process to school contacts and document participation agreement from schools. Compile, analyze, and prepare process data and communicate the findings to Project Manager and research staff. Prepare progress reports and meeting minutes. Prepare documents (consents, applications) for review by the Human Research Protections Program. Complete study-specific data on application forms as required by the IRB.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of basic scientific principles and procedures and sound judgment in evaluating results.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, tactfully, flexibly, and patiently in person, on the phone, and in writing to a diverse population.
Ability to keep accurate files and records and maintain confidentiality of clients.
Demonstrated skill in critical thinking.
Demonstrated initiative and capacity to lead.
Demonstrated experience with Microsoft programs (PowerPoint, Excel) and Access database.
Demonstrated experience in scheduling, managing and maintaining a calendar.
Demonstrated ability to draft, edit, and proofread correspondence, meeting minutes, and/or progress reports.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in designing, implementing, and modifying research protocols, psychological instruments, and database programs.
Demonstrated experience in a research setting involving human subjects (both qualitative and quantitative).
Theoretical knowledge of tobacco cessation research.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
Some evening, weekend hours, University holidays and travel may be required.
